RED
Fairy tales and folklore typically conclude with a moral of the story, a lesson to learn or a warning to heed. In the classic Little Red Riding Hood, the moral of the story is don't talk to strangers and be careful walking alone when you are as sweet and pure as Little Red was. In modern times, we tell this same warning, but it's often used to blame victims of sexual assault and harassment. The idea of this installation was to show how harmful this victim blaming can be, and remind society that it is not the innocent who are at fault, but the wolves who prey on them.
I used linoleum prints to create somewhat of a template, as it felt more connected to folklore and narrative art than my usual digital art. I then turned both prints into dating profiles: Once Upon a Profile... shows a friendly optimistic Red Riding Hood, while To Catch a Predatr features the wolf on the prowl. Both are framed with pages taken from the book Real Rape by Susan Estrich, who in 1987 was attempting to erase the idea of victim blaming.
